[ she used to be able to save a man from drowning, but for now, tinker bell can do nothing but stand by the railing of the ship and watch as he flails. water splashes yards upward and he calls out, a shrill cry, before he's snatched down into the water and the seafoam leaves no trace of him.
tinker bell can see nothing beneath the waves, no shadows lurking there, waiting to rise and consume their ship whole, but she reels back from the railing, nearly slipping on the damp wood floor.
they've been commandeered. she takes a glance at the man who calls himself captain, gaudier than the rest with lenses on his face and a jacket that must be stifling in the tropical weather, and, jaw set and shoulders square, she marches over to him, hand reaching out to grab his shoulder, force him to turn to face her. ] You did something, didn't you? You knew that would happen.
[ and tinker bell could've helped, ages ago, when she still had magic - and some say she still does fairies never lose it, after all, just the belief. ]
[the little thing hadn't been an issue until now. her hand grasps at hannibal's shoulder and it takes him a moment to respond, shoes clinking as he shifts slowly to face her. he doesn't hit women, but the amount of sheer disbelief that she's touched him shows, even through his glasses. his jaw clenches, lips set in a thin line as he tips his head towards her hand on his shoulder, then at her. a free hand slinks into his pocket to finger at his knife.
his voice is a low rumble when he finally speaks up.]
Get your goddamn hand off'a me.
[he gives her time to retract, he does, before rolling his shoulder.]
What do you care if I could'a done something? He's gone. Dead. You wanna do something about it, jump in and save him.
[ it's with defiance that tinker bell finally does snatch her hand away, shaking her wrist out as though injured before letting her arm hang at her side. back when, she knew how to take hearts. steal them. control them. she wonders if it would still be easy, reach into someone's chest and grasp -
something tells her she can't, and she instead gestures violently out toward the ocean. ]
There's something out there,[ she insists (because there is, he couldn't sink that fast, one minute there and the next minute gone), voice low, voice heavy, and she's learned not to show fear, she has. measured breaths, deliberate movements, eyes intent and focused, and she drops her hand. ] What do you want me to do, drown myself? You're the captain. Act like it.
[hannibal's brows raise considerably as she questions his authority. the crew members slow their jobs, taking heavy glances at the both of them. he dismisses the issue with a wave of his hand and grins; gold teeth glimmering defiantly back at tinker bell.]
If you think I don't already know there's something big out there then you're in the wrong goddamn place. It's why we're here, kid. Wake up and smell the coffee.
[he pokes at her shoulder roughly with his index finger and leans in closely, lips nearly touching her ear,]
If you ever question my ability to captain a ship again, you won't have such a nice trip down to the bottom of the ocean like the guy you're so concerned about did. You understand?
[ she jerks her head back, but the message reaches her loud and clear. she's not afraid, she doesn't skitter backward, but the steps she takes a heavy and measured. she takes a glance back out to the sea, then back to him, still glaring. ]
Right, and I don't exactly see you doing anything about it. I'm going to assume you commandeered us for a reason.
[hannibal looks taken aback, placing a hand over his heart.]
You hadn't heard? Tut, tut. [he clucks, brows furrowed in mock-disappointment, lips forming a small pout.] Your crew has goods, and we were low on weapons and food. Nothing personal, dear. You just happened to be the only ship in the sea.
You could act responsible. At least come up with some kind of plan. [ it's all defense; she has no idea if he's lying or not, because words are just that - words. she's been betrayed enough to have her trust wounded. at the very least, he doesn't sound like his intentions have anything to do with magic, but who's to say that's entirely truthful? ]
You let me know when you decide to play captain. Until then, I'm not a part of this.
I wouldn't be here right now if I wasn't responsible. In order to survive, you need a few tricks up your sleeve. You wanna play the fool? Go for it. But don't come crawling back to me when half your ship is sunk because the thing out there ate half of it for lunch and I'm miles away.
[of course, he's confident most of his men in a ship quite a bit ahead of them will attract the monster. and kill it without bringing it around back here.]
I'm the fool? [ she may have said she was out of it, but apparently that's a lie, because as soon as she's so much as looked in another direction, she's rounding on him, pointing at herself. ] There's something out there and you're the one sailing past it. Whatever happens? It's not going to be my fault.
[ that plan better remain undivulged, too, as she'd consider it the most foolish thing ever. and there's a bloodthirsty sense in her that makes her want to go out, go under, go and fight whatever it is lurking there.
but then again, the captain might be more of a prime target. ]
